Tuesdays with Dorie: Granola Grabbers

Ah, "Granola Grabbers." Such an aggressive, puzzling, tantalizing name for what turned out to be a fairly mediocre cookie.

I'm hesitant to say that I disliked these cookies, because there was nothing overtly offensive about them, but I will say that I was distinctly underwhelmed. There's just too much going on! In addition to regular cookie ingredients like butter and sugar, they call for granola (I used my favorite homemade variety), two kinds of nuts, raisins, coconut, and wheat germ. (What, no kitchen sink?)

I even did these cookies a favor and replaced the raisins with a mix of chocolate chips and peanut butter chips, and how did they repay me? By tasting like the scraps found at the back of a snack cupboard--every bite had a different taste and texture, but the end result was more disjointed than exciting. It's disappointing, but I guess I can't expect to love every single Dorie recipe, right? Onward and upward.

  1. I'm sad you didn't like them! We happened to love them here - but I did mix the recipe up a little differently. Maybe next TWD you will like better! Welcome to the group!

  2. My family loved them. However, I replaced the peanuts and used cashews throughout. And, I used coconut gathered from one of our trees in the backyard.

Still, the recipe was a little off ... 375F for 10-12 minutes? Please. Burn central.

Looking forward to the ice cream thingie next. That'll be a challenge here where room temperature is 85F+.

Sorry you didn't like them. You're right - they're kind of an "everything but the kitchen sink" kind of cookie. Hopefully next week will be better for you.

oh, too bad! at least they didn't take much time. i always hate it when i spend hours making something only to be unimpressed by it.

  9. I'm sorry you didn't like them. I like the idea of putting in some PB chips, so maybe I will try to remember that for next time. I know we all won't love each and every recipe, but I find that it's still tough for me when I don't like something. Anyway, they look great.

  14. I felt the same way about these cookies - just not great but I can't put my finger on why that is, given all the great stuff in them (and I added choc chips too). Some other folks seemed to like them well enough, so chalk it up to personal taste, I guess. Lord knows it can't be because Dorie can't bake!
