Molasses Cookies and DSLR Camera Recommendations

Oh friends, I have a serious problem. My beloved digital camera, she of ancient years, scratched body, and pitiful megapixels, has finally bitten the dust. She has been on all my vacations, been present at weddings and funerals, and taken thousands of food photographs. A moment of silence, please.

At first I was not too distraught. After all, it was her time, and she went with moderate grace and dignity. Ashes to ashes. Plus, now I could get a new, super updated camera without any guilt! After reading way too many reviews, I settled on a midrange Fuji point and shoot. It came, it was tiny, it was cute, it seemed perfect.

But friends, after playing with it for a week...I hate it. HATE. It doesn't have any of the customizing options of my old camera, like manual focus. After taking loads of mediocre photos this afternoon, it left me feeling like this:

So I am about ready to upgrade to a DSLR, but I need advice. If you have one, what kind do you have? Do you like it? What lenses do you have? (I'm interested especially in macro lens recommendations.)
And the soft molasses cookies? Not much better than the new camera. I didn't even finish one, which hardly ever happens. And the hubs thought they were so forgettable, he literally couldn't remember what they were a few hours after eating them. I mentioned I was going to toss them, and he said, "Oh, the chocolate cookies? Okay."

Not a stellar day in the kitchen, for sure. But onward and upward. DSLR me, people!

  1. Bummer! Doesn't sound like a good time all around. The cookie pics still look good, must be the skill shining through then :)

I know this is just a point and shoot, but I love my Canon Powershot G10. There's a review here if you're interested.

    Cheers!

  2. Sorry to hear that your trusty old camera died and the new one sucks!

I *heart* my Canon 450D (aka the 'Rebel XSi' in the United States, I believe), his name is 'Digital Dan'! And the budget 50mm 1.8 lens rocks socks.

I hope you find your perfect DSLR :)

  3. Oh I'm sorry about both! I loved these cookies, thought they were fabulous! I made the cran apple crisp this week, so good!

I just have a Canon Powershot A630, but it works great :)

  4. I'm sorry you didn't like the cookies, but I guess they're not for everyone. Thanks for baking with me anyway.

I have the same camera that The Sketchy Cook has and I LOVE it. I even have that lens she's talking about and it's so good!

  5. Bummer about your camera and cookies! I recently bought a Nikon D90, and LOVE it (I'm still saving for a macro lens). We took great video with it on our recent vacation. When we bought it, it was the only DSLR with video capabilities, but now there's at least one other Nikon and perhaps a Canon that can take video. I hope you find the camera (and cookie!) of your dreams.

Too bad about the cookies, but they look pretty!

Good luck with the camera hunt. I like my point & shoot, but I admit that I want it to do things that it can't.

  7. I've been going back and forth on making these cookies. Maybe I'll do a half batch tonight...
We have a Nikon D40x (replaced by the D60). I know everyone loves Canons, but I love Nikons- easy to use and most of the time a little cheaper.

  10. So sorry about your camera.. but its awesome that you'll be able to upgrade. This canon girl uses a 40D and I love it. 50mm lens is fabulous and does the trick.

Too bad you didn't really like the cookies.. they still look great :)

  12. I have a Canon EOS XTI and I love it. I purchased a zoom lense and also a macro lense and love this camera. If I don't want to lug that around I purchased a Canon SD 780is and it is the bomb. I can almost touch things with the macro and it is fully automatic or I can do full manual. I like it because it fits in my pocket to take anywhere. It also makes HD video just in case that is what I need. Hope you find a camera that suits your needs. good luck

  14. It is a shame that you did not like these but they look great. I am going to make them so I will find out, if they are good for my family or not.

Sorry about your camera. We can all understand that frustration.

  15. Camera issues drive me almost as nuts as computer issues. Sigh.
I have a Fujifilm S5000. I like it a lot, but don't know anything about cameras. I do know that when we go on quick day trips, etc., my husband keeps talking me in to taking his little one, like the one you just bought and I never like the photos! So I hear ya and wish you luck on getting a good one!
I think molasses cookies just aren't for everyone!

Ouch. bummer day. I have a little basic digital so clearly I have no advice on cameras. I would love a fancy one but have a little issue with breaking things. Maybe in my next life.

  21. I can't help with the DSLR problem, because I can't afford one, but I'm sorry you didn't like the cookies -- we thought they were amazing. They're one of our favorite Dorie recipes so far. But hey, there have been others that everyone raved about and we hated, so there's no accounting for tastes!
